The student ministry at Western Avenue Baptist Church is split into High School and Middle School. The High School Ministry is designed to target students in 9th through 12th grade and the Middle School Ministry is designed for students in 6th through 8th grade.  Our goal is to see students and parents working together with the entire body of Christ to make the name of Christ known.

Currently, our 6th-grade students are studying Everything You Need to Know About Being a Teenager while 7th & 8th grade students are studying book by book.  High school students in 9th-12th grades explore the Old Testament and how it is fulfilled in the New Testament. Each of our classes has a teacher (or teachers) as well as a group of shepherds who provide extra support, fellowship, and outreach opportunities for the class.

Middle School

Middle School Ministry is geared to aid families with students in 6th through 8th grade. We strive to help students catch a vision of Christ as king and their place in His work. We also work to equip parents to navigate the many changes in their students and families as they enter a larger world. Some of the ways we go about that are:

The Waypoint

On Wednesday evenings, Middle School and High School Students meet at 6:00 pm in the Multi-Purpose Room. We call it "The Waypoint" because this is a time for the students to pause on their journey to reach deep into God's Word and find the truth contained within it. Together we have a few activities and worship together through song, scripture, and prayer. Following the corporate time together, the High School Students move to the Annex (142) and Middle School students stay in the Multi-Purpose Room for a focused, age-appropriate Bible Study.

Retreats

One of the best ways to grow in Christ is to strengthen friendships and give students an opportunity to experience life together. So, we offer fun fellowship events throughout the year. We offer outreach and service projects through our Sunday School classes because we feel it is essential for students to have an outlet to serve those around them for the glory of Christ.

Each year we host several retreats: 6th Grade Orientation and Fall Retreat. These weekends away from the normal grind help students to experience the truth of God's Word in new and exciting ways.

Summer Trips

Each summer we have two major trips: camp and a mission trip. Our Middle School students have served as close as Asheville, NC and as far away as Portland, OR. Summer camp is great for helping students look more like Jesus, and mission trips are a great opportunity for them to share Him with others.

High School

High School Ministry is geared to aid families with students in 9th through 12th grade.

The Waypoint

On Wednesday evenings Middle School and High School Students meet at 6:00 pm in the Multi-Purpose Room. We call it “The Waypoint” because this is a time for the students to stop along their journey and equip themselves to continue walking with Christ.

Together we have a few activities and worship together through song, scripture, and prayer. Following the corporate time together, the High School Students meet in the Annex (142) for an in-depth Bible Study.
