The Bible has much to say to senior adults and a younger world’s relationship with them. Old age is most often associated with wisdom. Job 12:12 says, “Wisdom is with aged men and with long life is understanding.”  The Bible tells us we are to honor those who have lived a full life. But old age also brings other, often unwanted, things with it: decreased energy, eyesight, hearing, and various aches and pains. Life can become a rut, a predictable series of events that never change from day to day.

It doesn’t have to be that way, especially for the older Christian man and woman. Old age can bring about an even greater love for God, for the people of God, and for the things of God. Seniors have often walked with God for many years and have seen and experienced so much more than those years younger. A church that is right WILL value and honor its older members who have spent decades in fellowship with the Lord, in the study of His Word, and in service to His church.  After all, God knows the value of older individuals:

  • Paul was in his 60s when he made his final mission trip.
  • Moses was 80 when God called him to lead Israel out of Egypt.
  • Caleb was 85 when he drove the enemy off his land.
  • John was pushing 90 when he wrote the Book of the Revelation.
  • Noah was 600 when the flood came.

Indeed, the church is blessed to have men and women who can say with that senior adult of old, the Apostle Paul, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”

The Senior Adults at Western Avenue Baptist Church experience an abundant life in Christ. The Senior Adult ministry, Young At Heart, seeks to honor God by providing opportunities for seniors to grow spiritually, fellowship with one another, and reach lost and unchurched senior adults in the Statesville community.

This growing ministry also encourages senior adults to NOT RETIRE in their service to Christ. There is still plenty of work to be done and some of that work can be done best by our more “seasoned citizens” who know from experience the ways and will of God.

Young at Heart Ministry

Young At Heart meets on the first Monday of each month at 10:30 am for a special time of fellowship. We enjoy a fine meal prepared for us while engaging in conversation with friends around the table. After the meal, we have a brief meeting to discuss and plan upcoming events and relay any news we need to hear. We close the time with a guest speaker who delivers a message designed to address our specific needs. Join us in the Fellowship Hall each month for this special time.

Stretching Seniors

Join us Tuesday and Friday mornings at 9:00 am in the Multi-purpose Room for a great time of stretching and having fun getting into shape.
