As we enter into a new election cycle, we are all well aware of the common practice of politicians taking small sound bites from their opponents and twisting those words to make them say something foolish or extreme that the original speaker did not intend. Our entire culture is swarming with edited sound bites and photoshopped images and we consumers are faced with the task of determining what is real and what is fake. Christians often have to do the same thing with the way the Bible is quoted (and sometimes we are the misquoters!). There are several verses in the Bible that are so familiar that we unknowingly misuse them because we misunderstand them. We misunderstand these verses because we think we know them so well that do not feel the need to study them. However, when we take well-known verses and misquote them or misuse them, we leave behind a trail of confusion, error, and faulty decisions. In this study, we will come face-to-face with some of the most misused and misunderstood verses in the Bible. These verses have been taken out of their context and taken on new meanings. However, when interpreted and applied properly, these same verses will take on new meaning – its intended meaning. Once we know the original author’s intended meaning, we can apply the truth accurately.
