The Gospel: What It Is, What It Does, & Where It is Going

What is the gospel of Jesus Christ? You’d think that would be an easy question to answer, especially for Christians. In fact, you’d probably think that a class like this would be completely unnecessary. Would you ask carpenters to take a class called, “What is a hammer?” However, can you answer the question? What is the “good news” that Christians always mention and what is so “good” about it anyway? Would you say, “The gospel is that God will forgive your sins if you believe in Him.” Or perhaps you might say, “The good news is that God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life.” Maybe you would mention Jesus’ death on the cross and his resurrection. Perhaps the simple question is more difficult and much deeper than we imagined. Yet it is only the gospel through which prisoners are set free, the lost are found, the blind see, the hungry feast, and the dead are made alive. The world needs to hear this good news and we must be able to communicate it clearly. To do that, we must first know it and understand it fully ourselves. We must because if the gospel is assumed, it only takes two generations for the gospel to be confused, and finally, to be lost.
