Isaiah: The Fifth Gospel

Room 151
Teacher: Jeff Spry

The book of Isaiah is considered the deepest, richest, and most theologically significant book in the Old Testament. It’s sheer size and strange scenes scare off many from digging into its beautiful picture of the Holy One of Israel. Once we open its pages, we find a profound statement by God about his sovereignty and majesty and his great plan to save a people in the midst of intense political upheaval in which all the traditional and spiritual and moral values were being questioned and rejected. That great plan centered on the Messiah, about whom Isaiah makes more references than any other Old Testament book. This focus on the coming Savior led the New Testament authors to refer to it so often that many refer to it as “The Fifth Gospel.” Ultimately, the message of Isaiah offers today’s readers a God-centered confidence that enables us to face anything while challenging us to trust God’s promise to restore, renew, and revive his people.
