Teacher: David Moss

The apostle Paul wrote a short letter to a small Christian community almost two thousand years ago and yet that letter still speaks relevantly today. This is true because the situation facing that Colossian congregation is so similar to us in 2010. They faced opponents who challenged and belittled their hope in Christ, just as the secular society in which we live scoffs at our faith. This criticism can eat away at the foundations of a weak faith as confrontations with laughter and scorn lead some to fall away. When Christians do not understand their faith, they are likely to water down the gospel and make accommodations to cultural expectations. When Christians do not live with a deep sense of gratitude for what God has done for them in Christ, they will become engulfed in anxiety and tempted to look for security in something other than Christ. When Christians live no differently from those around them who do not know God or defy God’s commands, they bring discredit to their faith and cause others to think that their claims are false. Paul wrote to the Colossians (and to us) that we all might grasp ever more firmly who Christ is and the incredible riches of all God has accomplished on our behalf through the person and work of Christ. This letter will fortify your assurance of the hope you have in Christ and his supremacy and sufficiency. In return, you will not only be solidly grounded in your faith but will live ethically above reproach and live lives worthy of Christ.
