WINTER QUARTER January 7 to March 25, 2009
Old Testament Theology Skip Cartin The Old Testament is more than a religious history of the nation of Israel. It is more than a portrait gallery of heroes of the faith. It is even more than a theological and prophetic backdrop of the New Testament. Beyond all these, the Old Testament is an inspired revelation of the very nature and character of God and of the meaning of history. By taking a narrative and chronological approach to the text of the Old Testament, you will see that the unifying theme of the Old Testament is the “in-breaking of the kingdom of God.” In this study, you will come to know God personally, understand the nature of God’s revelation, better understand both the Old Testament and New Testament, and contribute to your own spiritual formation.
Overcoming Sin and Temptation Jeff Spry John Owen wrote in The Mortification of Sin in Believers that “the vigor and power and comfort of your spiritual life depends on the mortification of the deeds of the flesh. You must be killing sin or it will be killing you.” The battle with sin is no superficial technique of behavior modification. It is a profound dealing with what was accomplished on the cross in relation of the supernatural working of the Holy Spirit in life of the believer. Sin is tenacious and seeks to destroy you but by God’s grace we can hate it as He does and hunt it down to kill it. John Owen provides the master guide for the sin-hater. As we read Owen’s masterpiece together, we will understand our heart and experience God’s grace.
Financial Peace Josh Dancey Did you know there are over 800 verses in the Bible regarding personal finances? This class will teach stewardship – how to manage 100% of what God has given you. You will learn the nuts and bolts of budgeting, begin to break the chains of debt, understand credit cards and insurance and investments, plan for retirement and college, and unleash the power of generous giving. The average family pays off $5,300 of debt while saving $2,700 during the time this class meets. Wouldn’t it be nice to be “average”?
Glimpses of God: Jesus Brian Pestotnik In his previous class, Brian led us through the Scriptures that gave us glimpses into the person and work of God the Father. In this class, he will lead you through a study of some well known and obscure accounts of God the Son. From the “Jesus Seminar” to the spiritualists on Oprah, many people are reinventing Jesus today. We will be studying Jesus according to the Bible in both the Old and New Testaments. Our goal is to study the authentic Jesus and love Him for who He actually is - not what we have re-created Him to be.
The Usual (and unusual) Suspects: Lessons from Post-Flood Genesis Characters David Moss The world was very different after the flood. In this study, David will provide character studies of some individuals both famous and infamous. There is much to learn from how the people related to God and their neighbors – lessons that we can apply to our own lives six thousand years later.
Journey to Jesus Monica Hosch Do you yearn for a closer walk with the Lord? Are you hungry for a fresh encounter with the Savior? Journey to Jesus will lead you back in time to the ancient lands of the Scriptures and uncover important truths for our world today. As you learn how the Old Testament points to its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ, you will discover God’s ultimate plan of redemption and how it can change your life today.
