Nine Marks of a Healthy Church

Teacher: Jeff Spry

Today’s Christian leaders seem to be obsessed with becoming bigger. There are too many books to count that teach pastors how to grow their church larger by becoming a Purpose-Driven Church, an Emerging Church, a Seeker-Sensitive Church, a Market-Driven Church, or any kind of church you can imagine. However, it appears that not many focus on making sure the church is healthy and properly bringing glory to God. In this class, we will attempt to recover what the church is meant to be by reviewing nine characteristics that distinguish a healthy, biblical, God-honoring church from others. These nine marks are not exhaustive but instead focus on certain crucial aspects that have sadly grown rare in our age. In the rush to evaluate churches on evident results such as increasing attendance and giving, the desire to persevere in biblical faithfulness often gets pushed aside. At Western Avenue, we believe that first must come because of an adherence to the second. We must take a long, honest look within. How are we doing?
